10 Bible Verses about Money and then some

Money. What comes to mind when you think of it? It can be quite an emotional topic, even to the point of disagreements and fights. Money is necessary as we need it to buy food and possessions. Stick with me as we look at Bible verses about money and even a few prayers for finances.

Often we think that ‘if only I earned this much money’ we’d be able to do this or that. We often see money as a way to achieve a certain status symbol. Does money control us?

Money is a matter of the heart. God wants us to honor Him with everything He has given to us. Do we?

Here’s a word for us from Adrian Rogers:

“You can sing all you want about how you love Jesus, you can have crocodile tears in your eyes, but the consecration that doesn’t reach your purse has not reached your heart.”

– Adrian Rogers

Isn’t that the truth? If we aren’t willing to freely give of our finances, then have we truly set ourselves apart for God?

Have you realized that the New Testament has much to say about finances? Jesus told us in Matthew 6:21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.  [NASB]

Money is a huge topic. We could look at how to get out of debt, should we lend money to others, how money can kill friendships and a host of other topics. But today we will focus on Bible verses about money in four particular areas: contentment, possessions, provision and giving.

Bible Verses about Money

The Psalmist reminds us that everything belongs to the Lord (Psalm 24:1) so with that in mind, let’s look at what God has to say how we should view money.

Money and Contentment

I wonder what it was like to live when there was no currency. Sometime in Genesis, I suppose, a currency was introduced or maybe it was the bartering system. Either way, people placed a value on their currency system.

Hebrews 13:5 Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,”

1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.

Father, Your Word teaches me how I am to view money. Please search my heart and reveal to me if I have sinned by placing a high importance on money. I repent of holding wrong priorities. My desire is to serve You. Help me to view money as a means, not the goal. Help me to be content with what You have given to me.

Money and Possessions

I grew up in a poor family. My parents did the best they could with what they had. Our possessions were often second and third hand, from clothing to furniture. For years after I became an adult, I had this fixation with possessions. It took a long time but I can honestly say that I am free from the desire to ‘hang on’ to things. It took me a long time to reach this point.

Matthew 6:19-21 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; 21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Luke 12:15 Then He said to them, “Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions.”

1 Timothy 6:17-19 Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. 18 Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19 storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed.

Father, thank You for the possessions I have. I acknowledge that everything I possess comes from You. I realize that though I may not have a big bank account, I am rich in You. You supply my needs and for that I am thankful. Help me to fully understand what it means to store up treasures in heaven.

Money and Provision

One of the names of God is Jehovah Jireh. That name is translated as The Lord will Provide. God is our Provider. He owns everything (Psalm 24:1) and therefore everything is His. This means for us that when we have a need, we can bring it to Him and ask for His provision.

Matthew 6:31-33 Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ 32 For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Matthew 6:11 Give us this day our daily bread.

Philippians 4:19 And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Father God, thank You that You care so much about me that You are ready to provide my needs when I ask. You love me so much that You care about the tiniest detail in my life. Help me to remember to seek You first and Your righteousness so that You will be able to provide to me as needed. And though I may not understand everything, I place my trust in You and will wait for Your provision.

Money and Giving

We have already established that everything we have belongs to God. Does that mean that we do not have to give back to Him in the form of our tithe? Or does it mean that we do not have to help others with charitable giving? Let’s see what God has to say about this.

Luke 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.

Proverbs 3:9-10 Honor the Lord from your wealth And from the first of all your produce; 10 So your barns will be filled with plenty And your vats will overflow with new wine.

2 Corinthians 9:6-7 Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Father, I read in Your Word many verses that tell me about giving back to You. How I should be a cheerful giver and what I sow I will reap. Help me to give back to you the small amount you are asking for, because, really, it is only 10%. Help me to purposefully set aside this money first before I pay any bills.

You’ve given me so much and I want to be a cheerful giver. Help me to have a heart for giving, not only to You but also to others who are in need. And God, if I cannot provide it, I ask You to provide it to them through me. Use me to bless others.

That’s a Wrap

There you have it, Bible verses about money in four particular areas. There is so much more teaching that could be done in each of these areas. Quite possibly a future series, what do you think?

So, what are your thoughts on what the Bible says about money? Is this a touchy subject for you?

I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic. Please leave a comment for me.

    1. Yes, I agree that money is a sensitive topic but Jesus spoke much about it so I guess we should too. Thanks for the nomination, I will look at it.
