DIG Gals Bible Study: 1 John, Chapter 3

This is the third of five studies covering the book of 1 John.  Here are chapter 1, and chapter 2, if you missed them.

The DIG – Deep in God – Bible Study is designed to help you get more out of the Word of God than a casual reading would produce. We are studying based on the Inductive Bible Study Method but a more relaxed version.

Grab your tea or coffee, your Bible, coloured pencils, and a notebook or sticky notes and let’s get started. The first thing we will do is pray. The Holy Spirit is willing to help us understand His Word and to open our eyes to see the nuggets that we may otherwise miss.

We welcome You Holy Spirit in our study. Grant us Your anointing to help us to understand Your Word. Teach us, guide us and enlighten our minds to see the truths that are so plainly in view. Help us to recognize the nuggets of gold that are often missed. Help us to hide Your Word in our hearts so that we treasure it above all else. Thank you, Holy Spirit, for dwelling in us, and that you never leave us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Who are the foolish virgins? Matthew 25:2
Studies, Topical Study

Revealing the Foolish Bridesmaids: Parable of the 10 Virgins

Have you ever wondered who the 10 virgins are in the Parable of the 10 Virgins found in the gospel of Matthew? Specifically, who are the foolish virgins?

Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. Matthew 25:1

Let’s read the text found in Matthew 25:1-13, as Jesus is teaching his disciples on the Mount of Olives. They came to Him privately for the explanation of His statement about the temple buildings not left standing (Matthew 24:1). Jesus began to teach them about the signs of the end times. In chapter 25, He teaches about the kingdom of heaven and likened it to 10 virgins of whom five were wise and five were foolish.

In this study, we want to answer the question, who are the foolish virgins?

What Does It Mean to Take Thoughts Captive?

This is the final topic of our six week study series on What Does It Mean and today we will study 2 Corinthians 10:5 to learn what it means to take thoughts captive.

Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; 2 Corinthians 10:5

Let’s review this chapter for context. This section is concerning spiritual warfare and verses 3 and 4 are important as it leads to our text for today. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

Part 2 – What Does It Mean to be Ready in Season

Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine. 2 Timothy 4:2

This week’s study topic is What Does It Mean to be Ready in Season, Part 2 and today we’re exploring the relationship between preaching the word and sharing the gospel.

First question is, are they the same thing? Preach the word – share the gospel.

What Does It Mean to be Ready in Season?

Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering [patience] and teaching. 2 Timothy 4:2 NKJV

We are on study five of our six topic series and today we are studying What Does It Mean to be Ready in Season.

Let’s look at the context of 2 Timothy 4:2. What happened prior to this verse? The Apostle Paul, in writing to Timothy concerning the last days when men would be lovers of themselves and of their own pleasures rather than lovers of God, instructs him to be ready to preach the word of God at all times. Not only to preach it but to reprove, rebuke, exhort, with patience, those who are being deceived as well as the false teachers themselves. Remember that Timothy was a minister, a preacher of the Word and as a preacher, he is to be ready to preach at all times.

In season, that is, let no opportunity slip by and do it out of season, that is, not shift off the duty, under pretense that it is out of season. Matthew Henry Commentary.

False Teachers | Avoid False Teachers | False Doctrine

What Does it Mean to Avoid False Teachers?

We are continuing our series of What Does It Mean… with today’s topic “To Avoid False Teachers.”

Who are the false teachers? How do we know what to look for? What should we do once we determine they are spreading false doctrine? Should we tell others who the false teachers are so they would know? The answers to these questions and many more are found in the pages of the Bible.

This is a big topic and rightfully deserves to be in a series of its own but for today, we will answer the question of avoiding false teachers. To do this, we must first look at the false teacher himself. Who is he and what does he look like? Continue reading “What Does it Mean to Avoid False Teachers?”
